Trigeminal Neuralgia – How Acupuncture Treats This

This is the definition of trigeminal neuralgia:

A chronic pain condition that causes sudden, severe, electric shock-like or stabbing pain in the face. It affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain.

If you have trigeminal neuralgia, you can experience pain anywhere along the trigeminal nerve.

You can see from this image that the trigeminal nerve has many branches. It can cover your entire face. You can have pain anywhere this nerve covers. The pain can shoot down into your mouth.

My experience with treating this was with a patient who had Multiple Sclerosis. Her doctors had told her that her pain was related to her MS, and they could not help her.

That did not make sense to me. It seemed to me that regardless of any underlying condition, you can have an ailment that is not related.

There is no way that any health practitioner can have experience with every health issue. There are tends of thousands of things that can happen to people. So I told her I had not treated it before. I would treat it like any other type of pain.

Pain is caused by blocked circulation. In many causes, it is caused by tight muscles putting pressure on the nerves, which causes pain.

Acupuncture, used in the right locations, relaxes the muscles, so they no longer put pressure on the nerves, and the pain can stop when circulation is fully restored.

I believe that tight jaw muscles are a primary cause of this problem. If you think about it, we chew and clench our jaw muscles every day. We can also grind our teeth at night, without realizing it. There are several causes of this.

I felt her jaw muscles, and they were tight. I treated her about four times, and her pain went away.

Tight muscles on the face, put pressure on this nerve, and inflame, and irritate it. Every patient is different, and must be evaluated according to his/her exact symptoms.
